Why Whistler? Canada’s Whistler resort is a year-round holiday destination with world class mountain lift access to facilitate summer and winter use of the mountains – on skis, mountain bikes or foot. The Sea to Sky Corridor features many great tourist attractions and there is a huge range of outdoor or indoor activities to suit everyone. Skiing WhistlerWhistler has been the number 1 rated ski resort in North America for many years. Two mountains, Whistler and Blackcomb, rise up a mile from the valley to 1,609 metres or 5,280 vertical feet and access over 7,000+ acres of prime mountain terrain - including 12 alpine bowls, three glaciers and more than 200 marked trails which are serviced by 33 lifts. The resort is also home to the record breaking Peak2Peak gondola. Opened in 2009 the gondola links the 2 mountain and completes the longest continuous lift system on the planet. Average snowfall is over 30 feet or 9 metres per year, and the season lasts all the way from November through to August. Being close to the ocean however Whistler offers some of the mildest alpine temperatures to ski in – the average is just -5°C, making it a great resort for kids. [No altitude sickness] We have been skiing in, and bringing friends to Whistler for 19 years and still don’t feel we have exhausted what this incredible resort has to offer. The wide open trails and relaxed family zones are perfect for the nervous or beginner, while the double black diamonds and chutes will challenge the adrenaline junkies and experts out there. For us the magic of Whistler is skiing the unbroken 7 km (5,020ft of vertical!) Peak to Creek run and looking around to see we have the trail to ourselves. For our kids, it is scaring their parents in the gladed runs and terrain park. If you have never skied in Canada before you will be delighted by the courtesy of the staff on the mountains and the convenience, variety and value of the mountain restaurants. The well-designed lift system means that the line ups are civilized, orderly and fast moving. We highly recommend Ski & Snowboard School. They have taken our children from toddlers barely able to stand up in their skis to fearless parallel skiers in 4 years. For adults ski school offers a range of options: from first timers who want to have fun and their confidence built, to individual top-end instructors who will “tweak” the technique of even the best skier and produce improvements. Whistler Blackcomb also offers specialist clinics, most notably Roxy Camps (all women), Extremely Canadian (specializing in steeps), Dave Murray Training Camps (specializing in gates and off piste all mountain skiing) and Momentum Ski Camps (the place to go to nail your freestyle moguls technique).
